Off-Broadway, Nelis won an Obie Award for The Medium at New York Theatre Workshop and performed extensively at The Public Theater, Playwrights Horizons, BAM, and Classic Stage Company. He also received an Elliot Norton Award for his portrayal of Prospero in The Tempest.
