About

Tony Award nominee L Morgan Lee is an American actress, director and writer. She made history as the first openly transgender actor to receive a Tony Award nomination for her standout work in A Strange Loop. That performance also garnered her an Antonyo Award for Best Featured Performance and a Drama League Distinguished Performance Award nomination.

In London, L Morgan portrayed artist Lili Elbe in a workshop adaptation of David Ebershoff’s novel,The Danish Girl. Her previous work includes well over a decade of Off-Broadway, Regional, National/International tours, and concerts all over the world with artists from Paul McCartney to Our Lady J. She was a recipient of Singnasium’s 2022 Trailblazer Award and has been honored with an Obie Award as well as a Lucille Lortel nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical (both for her work in the Playwrights Horizons production of A Strange Loop.)

As a conceiver and director, L Morgan is dedicated to championing stories centering women and under researched voices on both stage and screen. The visionary - with a particular emphasis in development and education (and the ways that they can intersect to nurture and sculpt the voices of generations to come) - is in the trenches of building a slew of new work including a piece formally titled, The Women (2021), a response to Clare Boothe Luce’s 1936 play, where a group of women and nonbinary writers are asked to speak to the experiences and societal expectations put on women today. L Morgan serves on the Advisory Board of the Breaking the Binary Theatre Company where she directed a presentation of Shualee Cook’s play, Cercle Hermaphroditos as well a variety of other programming including Overheard: A Commissioned Collection of Monologues by TNB2S+ Artists that was recently published and made available by Broadway Licensing. She was a recipient of The Mark O’Donnell Prize presented by Playwrights Horizons and The Entertainment Community Fund for emerging theatre artists.

In the recording studio, L Morgan can be heard on the Grammy Award® nominated Original Broadway Cast Recording of A Strange Loop, The Rainbow Lullaby Album (Broadway Records), Joe Iconis’ album (Ghostlight Records), and purring out “Sugar Fly Soul” as Ornate Williams in the Sugar Maple audio series (Osiris Media).

L Morgan’s most recent work as a writer can be found in Playwrights Horizons’ publication, Almanac, vol.3 - releasing in October 2023.
