Hal (Harold) Prince (1928-2019) was an American theater director and producer, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern musical theater. He is best known for his innovative stagings of classic and contemporary musicals, including West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret, Sweeney Todd, and The Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Company, Candide, Show Boat, A Little Night Music, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Parade, and LoveMusik. Prince received a record 21 Tony Awards for his work, and he was also a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors and the National Medal of Arts. He is credited with elevating musical theater to a new level of artistry and sophistication, and his influence continues to be felt on the Broadway stage today.
